A.I. is about to become the Boom (& Bust) we have seen before with DotCom and Social. We will be tricked by some basic services which seem to be wonderful but lack substance, it will settle itself down and the winners will emerge as tech cycles tend to go. The challenge is how you think about what A.I. can be, once you understand that you can look at it through a lens of people.
Sounds strange right?
A.I. is machine learning after all, it’s the beginning of the Matrix meets Skynet meets Futurama (heads in jars is more realistic). It is not what you will lose, I mean you can’t escape the fact that it’s a new era and IQ only led jobs will lessen. That is the downside for many people but hey nobody likes change right, where is my typewriter….my walkie talkie….my camera…you get the point, sh*t changes, we have to deal with it. Way back in the days of Socrates and in turn Aristotle they talked about the ever changing world. People struggled to keep pace with the wave of change, has it been like this every time? Pretty much, it’s the human way to think their present is the newest, more different, most unique situation, it’s not.
The world is thinking about A.I backwards, it is not what each of us will lose it is what we will gain that will change our lives.
I have been predicting the impending changes for long enough (unicorns, butterflies & puppies), we are in the midst of change, we can’t halt it, we can open our eyes and minds to the opportunity it presents. Let’s define the power of A.I. using the lens of feelings!
WTF I hear you cry! Feelings…..but it’s a machine!
Here is the key to A.I., it is machine learning, it will learn and behave based on what you teach it. Consider that, a machine that learns based on what you teach (code) it to do. Let me share an example that made me stop in my tracks discussing code, I am not a programmer, at all, not even a smidgen and my programmer friend was sharing something that broke my brain for a few days in a very positive puzzle solving way.
We were discussing some ideas and she said ‘I would love to get together a group of programmers who create and code without conditional bias’
Me: ‘Wait, what do you mean?’
Programmer: ‘Well as you know everyone has conditional bias and it’s mainly subconscious so every piece of software, every service, everything has someones bias programmed into it, knowingly or not’
Makes sense if you think about it and I sure did think about that an awful lot. It opened a door in my mind as to what programming could be if you understand the intent of the feelings you want to generate, not for the machine but the individual using the service. I think I may have used the word individual in everything I write about (Marketing, Sales, Platforms, Code, Culture, Systems), I do this because personalisation is the key for the future of any business success, my passion is mass behavioural change and we have used personalisation methodology in everything we do to help our clients.
We have enough data and certainly enough experience (250+ creative projects and solutions across 10 years in my own businesses). Now seeing these results and understanding the opportunity of machine learning is all well and good but how to marry all these skills and insights together…….
This example is what I call people math, the challenge of how to understand what each individual wants, their sentiment and feelings and how to capture that, it is something you can teach machines to deliver.
The Science of Making People Act
I will pivot to neuroscience and then we can go back to Sentiment. My studies for the past two years have all been theories that if you can understand an individual’s brain you can create a map and solutions for a mass market, the goal is for each person to be treated like an individual, if you can accomplish that then you will win. Seems simple right, you, me, everyone responds better if you make them feel that they matter, that you give a shit about them, no matter what your service, product or whatever does, civility, feelings, care, empathy, it all matters.
So what makes A.I. good or bad?
Intent of the teacher. The ability to code a machine as to how we think is the true art. Not complete consciousness, let’s explore what that could mean for teaching machines or even better what teaching we want to do or not. Human sentiment is feelings, in communication we teach other humans to recognise what the other person wants, how to interact, what politeness is, when to be firm or gentle and on and on. We teach people communication, we teach people how to read situations, behaviours, habits, how to spot a change in someone’s feelings, some people we teach become experts and others are not so good. With people it depends on the teacher and pupil, with machine learning it simple depends on the teacher. Machine learning is an opportunity for us all, just beware of the raft of life changing services we are about to see and judge what is quality teaching and what is not.
